St Lucia Holidays

St Lucia Travel Guide

Holidays to St Lucia combine breathtaking scenery and beautiful beaches with a selection of superb hotels to deliver your dream Caribbean escape.

St Lucia is popular with honeymooners and is consistently voted one of the world's most romantic holiday destinations. That said, there are many family-friendly hotels in St Lucia, too. Whether you're seeking a secluded bolthole, laid-back luxury or buzzing resort bursting with amenities and facilities, St Lucia delivers a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

St Lucia's varied natural landscapes are one of the island's main appeals. Picturesque backdrops of lush rainforests, sandy beaches and the dramatic pitons set the scene for a variety of activities and excursions.

Whether you're staying for a full fortnight, or just dropping by as part of a multi-centre holiday, holidays to St Lucia tick all the right boxes.

Things to do in St Lucia - The Highlights

Adventure

Stick to the coast and you'll find all manner of watersports on offer, including windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. The island has some top snorkelling spots; Anse Chastanet is particularly good, there's a colourful reef just offshore brimming with tropical fish. If you'd rather keep your feet dry, hop aboard a boat and spend a magical afternoon spotting whales and dolphins in the ocean.

Inland, there's plenty more to explore. Relish the challenge of climbing the magnificent Pitons, take a dip in the mud baths of the world's only 'drive-in' volcano or embark on an adrenaline-fuelled zip-line adventure in the rainforest canopies.

Sightseeing

If you're not so keen on playing Tarzan, take a trip to the island's historical sites and towns. Shop for souvenirs and exotic produce in the bustling markets of Castries, St Lucia's capital city. Trek to Pigeon Island (linked by a man-made causeway to the rest of the island). A former pirate stronghold, it's now a national park. There are plenty of crumbling ruins to explore, and far-reaching views from the lookout at the top of Fort Rodney.

Nightlife

After dark, the area surrounding Rodney Bay and Gros Islet is the place to be. Be-bop the night away at the Friday Night Jump Up; this late-night street party occurs every week and is equally popular with locals and tourists. Show off your best moves, sample local rum and beers, and feast on grilled fish and other local delicacies.

If you're seeking a more tranquil experience, head further down the island. The south-west coast is quieter, coveted by those seeking romantic seclusion and typically where you'll find the island's more upmarket hotels, including Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. Evenings generally revolve around a relaxed dinner followed by a moonlit stroll on the beach, with a nightcap in the hotel bar.

St Lucia Holidays

You'll find hotels to suit both couples (take a look at Rendezvous - an adults only resort), families (see St James's Club Morgan Bay , with fantastic family accommodation and the calm waters of Morgan Bay). BodyHoliday is excellent for wellness holiday and if you're travelling on your own, thanks to its wide range of organised excursions and activities.

Best time to visit St Lucia

Weather in St Lucia

St Lucia, like most of the Caribbean, is a sublime winter sun destination. December - March is the driest - and most popular - time to visit, with average temperatures hovering around 27°C. Summer is slightly hotter and more humid. Hurricane season runs from June - October, which can see stormy weather and the odd bout of rainfall (thankfully, big storms are rare - and when it does rain, it usually doesn't last long).

Hotels in St Lucia are cheaper during the summer, but the weather is less reliable (it tends to rain more in St Lucia than the rest of the Caribbean, thanks to its mountainous make-up). May is a great month to visit - and you could co-inside your visit with the island's renowned Jazz Festival.

Dining in St Lucia

From hearty Creole favourites like the chicken pies and fish stews favoured by the islanders, to the more refined flavours of Michelin star-worthy restaurants, you'll find something to please all palettes in St Lucia.

The island's top restaurants serve up sumptuous views to accompany their fine-dining experiences. Several of the island's old plantation houses have been converted into restaurants, providing an elegant backdrop for the equally elegant fare.

In the more touristy parts of the island, you'll find Thai, Chinese, French, Spanish and even Indian flavours. Rodney Bay Marina is a great place to go for a quick bite to eat; cafes sit side-by-side along the waterfront and you can watch the yachts come and go from the deck.

Where to stay in St Lucia

North West Coast

Best for families and night owls. The north of St Lucia is more developed than the south, with a plethora of restaurants and bars. It's also home to beautiful golden sandy beaches, and the island's only resort town, Rodney Bay Village, just up the coast from St Lucia's capital, Castries City. By day you'll find a buzzing atmosphere with watersports aplenty and after dark it's St Lucia's best nightlife destination. Sip cocktails and watch the yachts come into the marina, take a punt in the casino or dance the night away at one of the nightclubs. The far north-west coast of St Lucia is also where you'll find BodyHoliday, a unique hotel known for its all-inclusive activity program and wellbeing focus, as well as Cap Maison, a luxury five-star, villa suite boutique resort. To the south of Rodney Bay is the adults only boutique resort Calabash Cove Resort and Spa famous for scenic sunset views.

South West Coast

Best for romantic retreats, getting away from it all and outdoor adventures. Home to (arguably) the most photogenic sight in the Caribbean (the pitons), the south is also where you'll find the most special hotels in St Lucia, such as Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain. It's quieter and very exclusive - perfect for intimate escapes. You'll find picturesque secluded bays, hip hotels and beautiful scenery. Many of the beaches in the south feature black, silvery volcanic sand - although some resorts import white sand to improve their beaches.

Castries City

Castries is the capital city of St Lucia. It's a colourful town, with a lively market where you can shop for souvenirs, as well as several malls offering duty free shopping. It's worth visiting the viewing point at the top of Morne Fortune, just south of the city, for scenic views of the harbour below. Near to Castries you'll find several popular St Lucia hotels, including the couples-only retreat Rendezvous (great for honeymoons). The family-friendly all inclusive hotel St James's Club Morgan Bay will be found between Castries and Rodney Bay.
